Nicole Kidman
Hey everyone I interviewed musician and good friend Jon Barba of Nicole Kidman!

Nicole Kidman is probably one of the most interesting band names i've come across how did you come up with that name?

A bunch of different reasons but mostly because i liked her in The Hours and Birthday Girl. And then like my best friend was named Nicole. I dont know. Literally i could spell out 10 reasons why i picked it way back when, but all the reasons seem pretty stupid now. Its like complicated but mostly because its not complicated and just like embarassing.

Embarassment is so cute on you though!

who would you say are your biggest influences? im kinda sensing a casiotone for the painfully alone vibe do you like him?
I think Third Eye Blind is my biggest influence lyrically. I hadnt heard CFTPA til a year or two into writing music but i think hes fantastic. i dont mind the comparisons at all. But like Postal Service is really cool.

That's really cool your sound is very unique this day and age when we're all the computer twenty four seven. Do people actually play real keys anymore? lol

You have a really cute soprano vocal style and you are so soft spoken IRL have you always been that way?

Hahaha yeah I suppose so. I never really liked my voice, like as a kid I got picked on about it a little bit because I never sound tough but I am pretty tough. Since I was pretty little I guess I've always been like more soft speaking than like people around me. I dont know...I try to be talkative enough to not be a wallflower but that's about as far as I can get most times.

What is your favorite song right now? or songs you have been listening to alot?

1. miley cyrus and taylor swift live duet "fifteen"

2. the muffs "funny face"

3. third eye blind "wounded"

4. elliot smith "ballad of big nothing"

5. IE "baby girl"

6. BYODeath "half shaved head, half long hair"

7. Q Lazzarus "goodbye horses"

8. drake "over"

9. miranda cosgrove "about you now"

10. john thill "youre dead"

What is your favorite color?

Blues and silvers and mostly colors of the ocean. whites and greens. I could stare at the ocean for FOREVER.

Do you have a favorite food?

YES! Pizza! Rocky Road ice cream! Hamburgers (NO CHEESE!)! And really hard tortilla chips

Are you single or looking?
COMPLETELY SINGLE and looking.

What's your most embarassing moment???

Probably asking this one girl to prom and getting turned down and then like feeling like my whole life was over...

Along with being a cool musician you also put on shows in your bedroom aka (ports o call) what inspired you to start that?

Turtle shouse mostly. and Women house. once turtle shouse stopped doing shows I just didnt want that whole wierd folk vibe to just disappear so I opened my doors and started having shows there. I like all sorts of music but I could only have like low-volume acts play there to deter neighbor complaints and cop appearances.

I have almost all of your ports o call zines they are all very different and very aesthetically pleasing and cute any inspirtations for those?

Mostly i started making those just like to apply myself, you know? be apart of like this whole music thing in a way where there isn't too much pressure. with music its like you're standing there and people pay attention and stuff but with zines you could get as personal or as goofy as you want and like i don't pay too much attention to how people feel about it. like for all i know 99% of what i've printed is all crumpled up in trash cans all over LA and the IE but like i don't make them to make fans, mostly just to like take some things that are personal and make them public in a personal way and then like hopefully it helps me with like dealing with things and stuff. TM! was a total inspiration for me making zines! i collect zines and stuff so theres little bits here and there from other zines ive found that inspire me to make things and stuff. TM! because like how its not serious and stuff. When i started getting into zines all i was able to find were like politlical and artsy zines but like all i wanted my zines to be about were girls and food and local music and like parents and stuff and finding TM! was like "woah! totally cool!"

What are your future plans for Nicole Kidman?
in august i'm going on tour! and im recording for a Deathbomb Arc Records cdr and a Folktale Records/silencio records split-release 7". Im pretty psyched about both but i hope i don't psyche myself out! i've been putting off recording for both just cause like recording is a pretty nerve-wrecking process. that, and like a bunch of shows. speakng of which, i really really really appreciate all of the support like from everybody setting up shows and attending and stuff, you know who you are. this is a pretty goofy way to be living my life but like with so many cool people and friends supporting it and stuff it really makes things easier, you know? thanks to everybody for helping with that.

Any last comments or shout outs?

I'm really looking for a girlfriend! so like anybody that thinks that that might be cool i'd be way into it! I'm planning the wedding already! I figured we'd get married on a ship and I'd want Rachel Ray to cook me and my girl our own special dinners for the ceremony. and it'd be total dance party afterwards but like super romantic for the wedding. The ship wouldn't leave the dock while we the wedding was going on but then like once we were married we'd kick everybody off and set sail all around the world! I don't know...I like to eat, i like music and i like talking sometimes. I don;t play sports but I'm way not opposed to walking around town or learning sports. I can fix things around house.

Wow Jon you are a young talented super cute guy and I hope all the readers get a chance to see you perform keep doing what you are doing and supporting us all in a big way! You get so many pizza's for doing this interview!!!!

Captain Ahab
One of Totallymag!'s favorite bands is by far Captain Ahab. From the first album "After the Rain my Heart Still Dreams" to present. There are many reasons as to why they are one of our favorite bands. First and foremost their talent! Ahab makes music to live by. It's an experience. Music you can paint your battle models to and envision crushing an opponents army and taking over their city! Music you can Larp to and really feel empowered music for us the NERDS the people with insatiable appetites for technology and hobbies! Mastering our crafts we listen to someone who has mastered theirs!

Captain Ahab is electronic music extraordinaire Jonathan Snipes beside him his disciple Jim Merson a talented actor/ dancer/ sweat producer/fellow rpg gangsta! While Snipes sings his lungs out to the crowd Merson will surprisingly come up behind or in front of anyone and smother them in sweat while relentlessly dancing to the sometimes steady sometimes mind blowing beat!

Another reason why Totallymag! loves Ahab is because they were also residents of the Inland Empire. Desert kids have a different outlook on life. Spending time in over 100 degree weather does something to the mind perhaps it has a spiritual effect and it transcends into the art they produce.

Art is what Ahab gives to his listeners with harsh noise and ferocity that can only be dealt with by engaging in vigorous dance moves and removal of your shirt. This is almost a necessary thing to do if you attend one of their shows!

Their new album dropped on April 6th 2010 entitled "The End of Irony." much to their fans delight!

Totallymag! has listened, learned and is now a believer in Captain Ahab the god of sound!

A film made by Lawrence Klein was also made to go along with their album some of the footage took place in our favorite venue The Smell

CAPTAIN AHAB "The End Of Irony" from Deathbomb Arc on Vimeo.

with all of this Totallymag! was most impressed with their clip on Caprica the prequel to BSG if you don't know what BSG is then i don't even know what to say it stands for Battle Star Galactica one of the most prevalent sci-fi series ever made. To hear ahab while watching an avatar girl trapped in a robots body was i don't even know what it was except brilliant! YOU MUST BELIEVE!

You can check out Ahab on captain-ahab.com find out more about them and listen to their tracks and buy their new album! Experience what thousands of youths are experiencing. Be enlightened and most importantly be you!!!!!
